I would say that i might depend on if the car is a high compression or low compression engine. On a high compression engine, yes it makes total sense, you need that pressure to be displaced as fast as possible, which means that the engine is never starved or overpressured. On a low compression engine, having low air pressure inside the combustin chamber may leave the engine struggling for power. But im not an expert, so i might be wrong. make a video testing it :)

I do NOT really agree. While in process of changing my exhaust, I had dual exhaust and did 1 side at a time. Put straight loud on 1 side. Had worse power. Switched it so straight was on other side, had more power. Put both on had a little less power. Ended up, putting old exhaust back on.

how do megaphones sound on 4cl engines? like possibly deleting the resonator and utilizing one instead. just bought a 96 prelude and I want to make a custom setup for it.

Just started the video, but one thing I have wanted for the longest time is a super quiet free flowing exhaust so I can drive a complete sleeper. I do not care for the “louder is better” exhausts that everyone seems to put on their vehicles. I don’t know of anyone that makes a quiet exhaust that gives max performance.

How far in the video did everyone get before they noticed the front tires are different than the rear tires?

I ran my dual 3" exhaust under the rear axle, no bends from the header collectors to the tips

my 1982 Chevy S-10 has a 6.0 liter V8 with long tube headers, 3 inch collectors that connect to dual 3 inch pipes with Flowmaster 50's. It sounds good but it's too loud. I don't have an X pipe. the mufflers have a center in and offset out and that's how I get the exhaust over my rear end. I have some ideas but I would like to know what you would suggest.

OJ, I have a question about tube diameter for low powered cars. I am swapping a Fiero 2.8V6 into my '72 MGB-GT to replace it's tired (125k mile) original 4-cylinder. The Fiero motor makes about 140hp (net) vs 95hp (gross) on the original engine, which is probably more like 50hp net on my old motor. Anyway, it will get headers and a dual exhaust. Your rule of thumb would suggest that 1.5" is sufficient, but I was thinking 1.75" for some headroom if I want to install a power adder such as a turbo in the future. Do you think that 1.75" would work in this application? Thanks. Dan

That rule of thumb is not good in my opinion. N/A is calculated based on exhaust valve measurements. Forced induction needs to be calculated by flow.

I still laugh at guys with 2,000$ exhaust systems on mustangs … I paid maybe 200$ for an 3 inch x pipe and some 3 inch pipe and dumped it at the axle … only bends I have is after the cat to the connection and the x pipe …

...and I hate exhaust that sounds like the car is exhausting through a large drainage culvert.

@fluid motorunion what are your thoughts on two mufflers vs one? I have a BMW X5, single turbo with full bolt-ons... planning to install either a pair or a single Valvetronic muffler. I'm assuming there's going to be a significant difference in sound between the two but I'm interested in the choice that would have higher flow/hp.

Have you ever looked at other materials. I've been a mechanic for nearly 15 years, anyway a few years ago I was talking to a person and he was played around with copper (very impractical) years ago, he said it change the note to a much deeper sound. Just asking out of curiosity.

Dual 3.5 is half the size of a single 7" - you would need quad 3.5 for your formula to work.

What if you have a civic and a two 90 degree bends? Where along would you place a vibrant resonator to help reduce drone best?

Curious if you’ve ever considered an exhaust mock up that allowed various pipe diameters, lengths, and the entire catalog of other assorted whatnots to allow a quick and dirty sound test without fully fabricating it? Even considering that in the vehicle some bends and whatnot will alter the final product/sound. It’s strange the the Vyron doesn’t sound all too exotic? Not heard one in person but suppose 1,000+ hp at the wheel has a way of overcoming any perceived less than ideal hair standing on end F1 like sound. I’ve got a 2011 mini cooper S I’d love to sound better. In the case you’ve already built that I’d be interested. But after watching I gather to this point all the great sounding cars came to be by fairly random blind luck. Lexus LFA is pretty epic as is Porsche Carrera. Could be just that V10 except the early vipers as delivered sounded a bit like a 4 banger. Maybe electronic cut outs are the ticket if you can avoid melted head components given zero back pressure. The various almost incalculable complications and combinations make my head hurt just hearing them. Borla doesn’t have much on you is my guess. Appreciate the headache. 😂

Great video! I’m curious, here in Australia I have a fun hatchback with a little 1.0 litre turbo 3 banger and 130 horsepower. I haven’t modded the exhaust, just tuned the ECU, but I was thinking of deleting the resonator. I’m wondering if replacing that with a megaphone would produce a cool sound?

The titanium thing bus interesting. The Engineering Explained channel tried titanium on his s2000. The sound quality compared to SS wasn't much. He pretty much has the same opinion as you. Just subbed and commenting for algo's. I used Vibrant for the first time on my current car. After a muffler delete, my gf hated the drone, she had to yell in the car just to talk. I put in a vibrant and now both the car and my gf sound better 👍
